Support Grows for the Nuclear Ban Treaty

Over the span of one week, two nations — Mongolia and Guinea-Bissau — became States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), and three major US cities — Boston, New York City, and Minneapolis — passed ICAN Cities Appeal resolutions.

On 10 December, Mongolia acceded to the Nuclear Ban Treaty, thereby becoming the 57th State Party, and was quickly followed by Guinea-Bissau, which deposited its instrument of ratification to the UN on 15 December. Guinea-Bissau is the tenth African state to ratify the TPNW.

The ICAN Cities Appeal resolutions call on the United States to join the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The Boston and Minneapolis resolutions outline Back from the Brink's five common sense policy solutions and passed unanimously. The New York City resolution calls on the city to divest public pensions from nuclear weapons and to establish a committee responsible for programming and policy related to NYC’s status as a nuclear-weapons-free zone.

All of this progress, and more, is taking place just months before the TPNW's first Meeting of States Parties.
