2025 marks 80 years since the catastrophic atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. These two bombs obliterated both cities and their infrastructure, resulting in the deaths of approximately 210,000 people by the end of the year. In Hiroshima, 80-90% of nurses and physicians were killed or injured and 42 out of the 45 hospitals became non-functional. The few physicians who survived and were physically able to assist the injured had to work without equipment, medicine, and other resources needed for effective treatment. Beyond the acute harm, the after-effects of atomic bomb radiation, including cancer, leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), continued to persist throughout the survivors' lives to this day.
